What's the first major news story you can remember living through as a child?

The Second World War.

I was around 6 years old. People were talking about countries being invaded. Things started being all about news from the war when I went to the movies.

My father left to go into the Merchant Marines. Then rationing took place. We had ration books. I remember the news when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The newsreels were so scary that I dreamed about them every night.

I am on my fifth Monarch. I remember when the old king got sick and died. Then the abdication. King George, Elizabeth’s father, was a lovely man. Then came Elizabeth’s coronation. Now Charles.
